amazon instead of aliexpress for housing

Rob Steele

I was wondering if anyone knew of a camera housing that would work for a meteor camera that I could purchase from Amazon instead of AliExpress?

Most of the ones on Amazon UK are plastic toys, suitable for baby monitors or birdtables but not for pointing upwards in all weathers. They're often too small for the camera module too. Plastic heats up too much, won't seal properly and is much less robust. Its really important that the window is glass, as plastic will throw internal reflections and mist up horribly. I have tried one - threw that piece of junk in the bin...

Needs to be metal. There's one on Amazon UK for £50 which looks reasonable.

The one's on US Amazon that I did see were very expenses and did not even include the mount. Thank you for the heads about the plastic ones.

I paid around £100 for my original Genie 2000 housing, in 2016 !!
The Aliexpress ones are a bargain, even if they do take 6 weeks to turn up.

I think this one is almost the same as the AliExpress one:

https://www.amazon.com/OwlCat-Surveillance-Waterproof-Enclosure-6006A/dp/B09F8XWJKL/ref=pd_day0fbt_vft_none_img_sccl_2/130-1682538-7565317?pd_rd_w=Oy57j&content-id=amzn1.sym.740603ef-5416-4c6c-8609-ceb99d2a0eaf&pf_rd_p=740603ef-5416-4c6c-8609-ceb99d2a0eaf&pf_rd_r=4Y0ZKDBJSTXASA1EZ1HW&pd_rd_wg=xkfSC&pd_rd_r=94e157a3-a101-4524-ad12-49ba02acfe6c&pd_rd_i=B09F8XWJKL&psc=1

But you need to buy the wall mount separately:

https://www.amazon.com/USIDAER-Surveillance-Security-Adjustable-Universal/dp/B094QPBG5M/ref=pd_bxgy_img_sccl_2/130-1682538-7565317?pd_rd_w=X6jy0&content-id=amzn1.sym.6953b182-f957-43e6-9fe3-866e180e1e05&pf_rd_p=6953b182-f957-43e6-9fe3-866e180e1e05&pf_rd_r=AHMHQ6JD4FKCBHBQE9VC&pd_rd_wg=Lx6k4&pd_rd_r=f5719efb-8248-42ba-ac17-6d78ec5902b3&pd_rd_i=B094QPBG5M&psc=1

The one thing you won't find on Amazon in the US is the metal camera bracket (see pic) that mounts the IMX291 to the bottom of the housing, which you'll need from AliExpress. So, you can try the math of some parts from the US vs. all parts from AliExpress and see if it makes a difference.

Worth noting that this is being sold by a chinese reseller and shipped from China. Import duties may be levied, depending on your local rules. The seller is also actually part of the Aliexpress network (owlcat is a trading name of Yuchaozhineng I believe).

In the UK, item costs £38 after tax and duty and takes 2 weeks to arrive.  The same item on Aliexpress is half the price, though it may take longer to arrive!

A local security system vendor donated a brand new CCS case when I first built the camera.  It's outstanding!  I put extra silicone around the window, hinges and edges/door jam.  You might also find used housings being given away when businesses remodel, close down...

Great idea. Thanks.

Mine from Aliexpress was delivered in under 2 weeks.  I was pleasantly surprised by the speed.
